Program Note
Welcome to the Hotel Waldhaus, an ideal destination for the family, but also for the solitary traveler seeking plenitude and calm. In the tradition of Alfred Hitchcock comes an off-beat thriller that has its roots planted firmly in both classical mythology and genre convention. Hotel is about Irene, a young woman who comes to work at a hotel in the Austrian Alps. She is replacing the receptionist who vanished mysteriously. When Irène begins to look for answers to this mystery, she is met with indifference and hostility from the other staff. She is soon convinced that failure to escape will result in her own doom. Director Jessica Hausner′s influences while writing the film ranged from Germanic mythology to Grimm faerie tales. Being more interested in why, as viewers, we are made comfortable with certain genre cues and road signs, Hausner maintains ambiguity throughout, and Hotel avoids spectacle and clean endings. Dealing equally with existential understanding and death, the film - like reality - does not have any unequivocal resolutions.
