Program Note
Director Marco Bellocchio has crafted a completely contemporary film based on a true story that unfolded over twenty years ago. In 1978, Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro was kidnapped by a terrorist group. It was a crime that shocked the nation. Chiara, a seemingly ordinary young woman, moves into a new apartment. But she is far from ordinary: she is a member of the terrorist Red Brigade, and it is plotting to kidnap and murder the prime minister. Events unfold from Chiara′s point of view. As the country plunges into crisis-mode, the crime takes its toll on the captors and Chiara begins to question both her commitment and her beliefs. Good Morning, Night is a thoughtful film that explores the failure of radicalism. And now, at a time when fundamentalism and terrorist cells are proliferating, the film is an allegory that transcends both time and its Italian context.
