Program Note
Jean and Marie are newlyweds on their honeymoon in Africa. Jean - the son of a colonist - wants to show the country to his new bride. But this is not an ideal vacation destination. Africa in Father′s Garden is in turmoil, struggling on the eve of an election and where violence has been nurtured for centuries. On their way into the city from the airport, Jean and Marie′s taxi hits a child in a crowded neighborhood. A crowd gathers and forces the couple to flee into an area where aggression flourishes and where the past haunts the present. Black and white, rich and poor, colonist and colony clash on one nightmare evening. The accident works as a metaphor for the relationship between the developed and developing worlds. The title, Father′s Garden, is a succinct description of the white colonial - and occasional native African - mindset of Africa as a private playground for the privileged. But in the end, two women, one black and one white, in solidarity, symbolize hope for a more equitable and respectful relationship between all the conflicting interests.
