Program Note
One day, Zano suggests to his lover, Naïma, that they both set out for Algiers in order to discover the land their parents had to flee decades ago. Lost in the perils of immigration, these two children of the Diaspora take to the road, almost defiantly, with music as their only luggage. They set off by train, ferry and foot on a road movie journey of self-discovery that finds them constantly heading in the opposite direction from the Algerian refugees seeking the promise of a better life elsewhere. Traveling through France, Andalucia, Morocco and, finally, Algeria, the couple bicker and bond, earn some money by picking fruit, steal lifts and encounter a good deal of hospitality and warmth among the gypsy families, illegal immigrants and Algerians they meet along the way. In an environment of chance meetings, techno rhythms and flamenco music, Zano and Naïma go backwards on the path to exile - hopefully claiming their identities at the end of the journey.
