Program Note
Who hasn′t felt, at some point in their lives, the desire to disappear from the face of the earth? This moment has arrived in the life of twenty-something Bulcsú, who seeks refuge from his problems at the subway, where he works. A myriad of plots includes characters like Roadrunner, a self-proclaimed member of the Passengers Liberation Society, who sprays ticket inspectors who then pursue him in heated chases down corridors, platforms and elevators. Béla, the fallen engine driver, feels just as much at home in the world of outcasts as Bulcsú. Szofi, Béla′s daughter, captures Bulcsú′s heart immediately, even though she is dressed in a Teddy Bear costume. A shadowy figure moves among them. The final battle will decide all between good and evil. A fast paced, humorous look at Budapest′s underbelly from an unseemly angle quickly develops into a metaphor about misfits hiding from reality. Director Nimród Antal deftly paints a rich fresco of modern Hungary, appropriately when it is about to join the European community with all the associated stresses and changes.
