Program Note
Recep and Mehmet are two friends who take summer jobs in Tavsanli, Turkey in the 1960s. Recep works for a watermelon salesman and Mehmet is apprentice to a barber. On the side, the two movie-mad friends dream of being film directors, and set out first to build a projector. The local crazy, Omer, is their only supporter. Everyone else believes that they should be spending their time on more useful endeavors. Recep meets Nezihe, who asks him for the rinds from his watermelons. They become friendly - having tea and doing favors - and eventually Recep meets her daughters, Nihal and Guler. A love triangle forms, with Nihal shunning Recep′s affections at every turn, while Guler develops an interest in the boy. As the summer wears on, the romances never blossom, the boys lose their jobs and their projector project is sadly destroyed. At the end of the summer, Recep and Mehmet are left only with hard-won life experience and celluloid dreams, which they will always have - even if they have little else.
