Program Note
A wide, endless field. Hundreds of horses and thousands of extras fill the screen. The music is equally grand and the cameras move about as if they′ re flying. This is the battle scene from the first co-production between Shin Films of Korea and Hong Kong′s Shaw Brothers. The Last Woman of Shang is the very start of a 10-years co-production system between Shin Films and Shaw Brothers starting in 1963. This film is based on a perfect combination of each country′s best film production resources: Shaw Brothers′ magnificent costumes, production designs, and highly developed filmmaking techniques met Shin Films know-how of open location filming based on previous productions of war films and period pieces, relatively cheaper crew costs, and many wide open locations in Korea. The Last Woman of Shang is a royal court drama about Ju-wang, a King of ancient China, and his queen Tanji, who became Ju-wang′s wife to pay him back for her father′s death at his hand. Shin Young-kyeun, a famous Korean actor whose masculinity was his trademark, plays the role of Ju-wang, and Linda Lin Dai, a Hong Kong actress famous of her cold and tragic beauty, plays the role of Tanji. Casting a leading actor from Korea and a leading actress from Hong Kong became a tradition for co-productions. (Cho Young-jung)
