Program Note
Hand of Death, an authentic martial arts film with a revenge plot, is the second Korea-Hong Kong co-production from John Woo, after The Dragon Tamers. Shin was once an apprentice of the Shaolin Temple
but betrayed it by standing on the front line in an attempt subjugate the anti-Qing dynasty rebel army. He captures Ten Siung, a former colleague at the Temple, and tortures him. When Siung commits suicide after
the severe treatment, the Shaolin Temple calls Youn Pei for the elimination of Shin. Ten Peng and Zoro, a swordsman bearing a grudge against Shin, join Youn Pei. In Hand of Death, you can also check out a young Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Biao - the big stars of 1980s Hong Kong cinema. Since the mid-1970s, Golden Harvest searched for new talents from its homeland, not from the outside. This strategy had two advantages. First, casting newcomers in co-productions could minimize risks. Second, newcomers could gain vast career experience from co-productions and also international acclaim based on them. Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung were regular actors in Korea-Hong Kong co-productions. Jackie Chan was a rising new star, Sammo Hung, who had just become famous as a martial arts director, also directed the martial arts for this film. It is also fun to watch Yuen Biao playing two different characters and John Woo making a cameo. (Cho Young-jung)
