Program Note
Since 1963, when Shin Films started co-producing with Shaw Brothers, actors and directors from Shin Films also started to forge careers in Hong Kong, in the form of providing property loans, up until the mid-1970s. The Black Hair features director Chang Il-ho and actors Nam Seok-hun and Jin Bong-jin, all of whom were very active at Shaw Brothers. One day, Kwan-jung, who is living with a beautiful weak wife saves Hwa-shim, the daughter of millionaire wang Jusa, from villains. Hwang Jusa sugests him marry his daughter with a big dowry, but his suggesion makes Kwan-jung hesitate. He finally poisons his wife. The dving, rotten-faced, and hairless wife leaves her word that she will come back as a ghost. Co-productions were somewhat exclusive to action movies, but several horror films were made in the 1970s. While horror films co-produced with the Philippines and Taiwan show more exotic scenes of voodooism and zombies, Hong Kong co-productions exploited their familiarity with Korean horror films. The Black Hairis full of Korean horror cliches, like the theme of punishing a mind evil from rapacity, and the vengeful female ghost with long, black hair, wandering the nether world. The sword action of Nam Seok-hun, who trained in Hong Kong, and a narrative structure that Chang ll-ho borrowed from authentic martial arts films, make this film a unique horror film.
