Program Note
This debut feature by Flora Lau, a rising female filmmaker of Hong Kong, was invited to the 66th Cannes Film Festival for Un Certain Regard. Two cities, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, are the backdrop for the film. The daily lives of Mrs. Li (Carina Lau), a high society housewife of Hong Kong and her chauffeur Fai (Chen Kun) from the mainland are plainly shown. Her husband’s bankruptcy and disappearance suddenly hurls Mrs. Li into confusion and destitution, while Fai struggles to get his wife across to Hong Kong for the impending birth of their child, only to be repeatedly frustrated. As the original Chinese title Beyond the Boundary suggests, the film expresses the emotional disconnect between mainland China and Hong Kong. The famous Christopher Doyle, well-known cinematographer of Wang Jiawei, filmed the sceneries of Shenzhen and Hong Kong in realistic black and white visuals. Representative Hong Kong actress Carina Lau and one of the most popular actors of mainland China, Chen Kun both give impressive and enthusiastic performances. (KANG Naeyoung)
