Program Note
Atusmi and Koichi had loved each other since they were primary school sweethearts. One day, Atusmi falls into a coma for a year after a failed suicide attempt, but Koichi stays by her side. Using a new neurological treatment called ‘sensing’, he visits Atusmi’s unconsciousness hoping to lead her back to life. Atusmi, from her unconscious mind, tells Koichi that she will wake up if he finds the picture of a plesiosaur that she once gave him as a gift in their primary school years together. Koichi makes a journey into the past drifting between reality and fantasy in search of the picture. Eventually, however, he gets lost when the past memory intertwines with the present. Based on a novel A Perfect Day for Plesiosaur by Rokuro Inui, the established director Kurosawa Kiyoshi looks deeply into the inner world of human nature travelling between fantasy and reality as well as past and present.
