Program Note
An 18-year-old girl, Ryoko, works at a beauty salon. She dislikes her monotonous life and is anxious about her future. One day, Kazuya, a mysterious character, moves into a room across the street. He sometimes meets with Ryoko but is secretive and does not say much about himself. Kazuya is actually a drug smuggler with the Shanghai mafia. He deals with illegal weapons and the local drug market, and is being chased by the Taiwanese mafia for cutting into their business. Ryoko comes to like Kazuya, and looks out for him. One night, when she is staying with him in his room, the Taiwanese mafia find out where he lives and come after him.... Blue Fish is representative of the dynamic young cinema of Asia today, visually striking and told with minimal details of storyline. The film offers a realistic portrayal of the delicate but capricious feelings of young people as they encounter romance.
