Program Note
Lena is in her eighth month of pregnancy. The child′s father has left her. Here, on an almost deserted highway in a desolate hinterland, she runs a small general store where people can also eat and drink. Vilela is hoping to make a fresh start in life far away from all the wrong turns and excesses which characterized his existence in Sao Paulo. Vilela turns up at Lena′s door; all he wants is a place to stay and the opportunity to start life anew. He sets about fixing up the run-down place; suspicious at first, Lena finds herself being drawn towards Vilela and, gradually, her feelings give way to passion. But then, suddenly, he disappears. Without warning. And with her money...

Toni Venturi
Born in SaoPaulo in 1955, Toni Venturi lived in Canada from 1976-1984, where he graduated in film from Ryerson Polytechnical Institute. Since returning to Brazil he has been working in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo as a freelance director of documentary programs for television and commercials. <b>Latitude Zero</b> is his first feature and his filmography includes three short films: <b>Under the Table</b>(1983), <b>Guerras 1985</b>(1992) and <b>1999</b>(1992); and a four part historical television documentary, <b>The Comrade</b>,<b> the Life of Luiz Carlos Prestes</b>.
