Program Note
Teenaged Jiang Zi is sexually molested in a public bathroom. His violation is as anonymous as the alienated metropolis he lives in. He turns to his friends for support but they are unable to handle the magnitude of the problem, and end up being of little help. His family is also incapable of understanding what he has gone through, and Jiang Zi becomes very depressed. Feeling abandoned, he suffers alone in his shame and embarassment. In anger, he shoplifts a long tool from a store and attacks the man who molested him, thereby spinning off a spiral of events that enlarge the chaos in his life. This film paints the lonely and painful world of a young man in an nameless city. The city is seen through its empty pavilions and squares, desolate parks and ruins of old architecture. On top of buildings, underneath cold neon lights, and in dark alleyways, Jiang Zi is truly alone. The only solace that he can find comes from watching a television program called "Animal World."
