Program Note
Nineth-grader Ayako has a strange dream one night. She dreams of herself as a child who meets a fairy of the winds in the village shrine compound. The fairy hands her a pinwheel. A sudden wind rises, the pinwheel twirls, and the large village windmills start to turn. The next morning, Ayako goes to school as usual, where she finds out something even stranger than the dream itself. All the students in her class claim they had thee exact same dream. What does this dream mean? It′s the village festival, and a bizarre wind chime vendor is seen roaming around town. Mitsuko, Ayako′s older sister, comes home after a long absence. All at once, so much is happening around Ayako now. The turmoil does seem to be inviting Ayako to the entrance of adulthood, just as her childhood is about to end.
