Carlobianchi and Doriano, two men cast adrift from modern society, are people who cannot live a moment without alcohol. In their search for drink, they encounter Giulio, an architecture student, and the three set off on a journey together. With no set destination, they wander like vagabonds—making this film an ‘anti-road movie’ road movie. Bars lead into roads, stories of uncertain truth emerge from conversations and memories, and strange encounters and incidents unfold against a backdrop of uncanny music. The result is a picaresque film with an indefinable quality, carried by Sossai’s distinctive tempo. The two rogues may resemble, yet also diverge from, the protagonists of Joseph Roth’s novel The Legend of the Holy Drinker. Whether they are truly ‘holy’ is questionable, but at the very least, they wander cheerfully alongside the next generation, loud and unrestrained in their musings on life. After watching, one of two impulses will likely seize you: either to visit Scarpa’s Tomba Brion, or to devour Sossai’s earlier works with an almost manic enthusiasm. (LEE Yong Cheol)
