Program Note
A record of the highly respected humanist Kim Uchang’s private life and intellectual world spanning 21 years. For 40 years, he has been living with his wife Sul Soonbong in a house with lots of steps and a leaky roof, where the open sky and the mountains can be seen. His children urge him to move, but he has no such intention. It’s because, according to his children, Kim believes that what remains unchanged is ethically right and that comfort is evil. The house, therefore, represents Kim himself. Amid piles of literature, he struggles to finish his last book, feeling he is past the age where he can maintain his writing skills. As you may have already guessed, this film is not concerned with publicizing his academic achievements. In the Sea of Strange Thoughts is a film that explores the cosmic thinking about death and life. Above all, it is a rare portrait of an extraordinary, peculiar man who leads a life in complete agreement with his scholarly philosophy. (KANG Sowon)
