Program Note
China 2002. In this neon-decorated land of opportunities there are 400 million young people with aspirations. China may have changed since Chairman Mao′s day, but how much freedom do people really have?If art mirrors society, then perhaps the answers can be found in the dilemmas facing Wang Yuelan, an ambitious man who dreams of becoming a film director. Placing the need for artistic freedom above everything, Wang believes that only by surmounting increasingly difficult conditions will he find the opportunity to express attitudes that will resonate with his contemporaries. Wang is accompanied by a tough producer, a lovely girlfriend, strict parents, and a fortune teller. But is it enough?
