Program Note
As an adult, Nawojka prays fervently to God every dawn. She begs to be freed from the miserable life shackled by all the hard labor on her family’s farm. Yet her prayers remain just prayers. The fear that she might be haunted by a demon, just like her mother who died possessed by an evil spirit when Nawojka was young, leaves her paralyzed. One day, a rebellious girl named Sandra appears before her. Growing closer to Sandra, Nawojka experiences a sense of liberation for the first time. Around that time, a chilling event occurs—the farm′s cows mysteriously die each night. Her Will Be Done is director Julia Kowalski’s second feature film, focusing on Polish immigrants in France. It is a provocative work that blends realism with elements of the occult. The film features striking imagery and poetic mise-en-scene that pay homage to classic horror films such as Brian De Palma’s Carrie (1976) and David Cronenberg’s Crash (1996). Its feminist narrative, which uses possession as a motif to explore and subvert the essence of witch hunts, also provokes intellectual interest. (KIM Kyeong Soo)

Julia KOWALSKI
Born in France to Polish immigrant parents, Julia Kowalski has continued to explore her roots in Poland. Her work consistently centers on themes that captivate her—working-class life, adolescence, family, sexuality, and faith. Her debut feature, Raging Rose (2015), was invited to the ACID section of the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and brought her into the spotlight. Premiered at the 2023 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, her mid-length film I Saw the Face of the Devil went on to win the France Télévisions Award at Clermont-Ferrand and the Ciné+ Award at Brive, as well as the Jean Vigo Award, earning widespread critical acclaim. Blurring the lines between fiction and documentary, the film follows the frenzied journey of a Polish girl as she grapples with a crisis of faith and descends into madness. It laid the foundation for her next project, Her Will Be Done, while revealing the fiery presence of actress Maria Brubel to the world. Her Will Be Done is selected for the 2025 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.
