Program Note
In this contemporary adaptation of the Korean tradition tale, the film portrays the madness of a young girl abused by her stepmother. It is director Kim Ji-Woon’s third film, and although he is known to have an outstanding ability in making comedies with elements of horror added to spice up the film, he has excluded all traces of comedy and made this movie into a pure horror film. The luxurious decorations in the background in contrast with the inhibited neurotic behavior of the girl add an eerie tension to the movie and as the audiences are fooled by the two dramatic twists in the story, the unexpected ending scene will leave a lasting impression on them.
