Program Note
Theatre director Lee Yoon-taek makes his film debut by adapting his theatrical version of OGU: A Hilarious Mourning for the screen. OGU: A Hilarious Mourning was staged in theaters in 1989, and has, at the latest count, been seen by audiences of approximately 2.7 million. It is a story about an old woman who meets the lord of the dead in her sleep. In order to escape from death, she practices exorcism. It is a drama about the struggle between the old shaman and the messengers of death. The old woman′s resistance against the messengers of death, who are humorously depicted with human weaknesses, is very powerful. The rhythm of the story is made from the actions and expressions of the characters rather than their psychological descriptions. The shaman′s rites are dynamic and yet concisely described.
