									During the 1931 occupation of Shanghai by Japan's armed forces, a Chinese resistance group known as Purple Butterfly plot the assassination of Yamamoto, the head of the invading country's secret service. Ding Hui who works for the clandestine organisation in the midst of this city rife with violence realizes that her pre-war Japanese lover Itami has returned to China and reports directly to the assigned target. Can Itami be trusted or will discovery of Ding Hui's identity and mission lead to the death of herself and her freedom fighting comrades?

														Born in Shanghai in 1965, Lou Ye won the Rainer Werner Fassbinder Prize for Best Director for his film Weekend Lover (1993) at the 45th Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival.  In 2000, his Suzhou River garnered numerous awards and accolades, including the VPRO Tiger Award at the 29th International Film Festival Rotterdam and the Grand Prix at the Filmmax Festival in Tokyo in 2001.  Purple Butterfly (2003) appeared in competition at the 2003 Cannes International Film Festival.
