Program Note
Night in Hong Kong. The pressure of the darkness is so intense that crime could erupt at any moment. Cops die everynight and the city is full of chaos and corruption. One night, "Ponytail", the boss of a group of thugs is murdered, and a veteran police officer, Lo, pursues the killer. He is lynched and gets his pistol taken away. Lo becomes worried about his pistol being used in revenge and doesn′t report the loss of his gun. He asks Ho, head of PTU, for help. Inspector Leigh, in charge of the murder investigation, has suspicions about Ho, and the situation becomes more complicated. In his latest film, P.T.U(Police Tactical Unit), Johnnie To cleverly weaves each character′s trail together, as they advance toward a commonend. Each character′s state of mind is vividly depicted. Timely used props and high contrast lighting techniques are the modern version of the legacy that Hong Kong noir inherited. The cellular phone serves not only as evidence, but also as an object that makes their investigation a roundabout maze. It is the agent that leads them all to a final turning point. The tightly fitted PTU uniform, limited dialogue, and characters that walk empty streets are the compressed images that dominate this film, implying professionalism and solitude that follows.(Kim Ji-hoon)
