The film begins with rough black and white images almost reminiscent of documentaries. For the simple soldiers posted near Tehran, listening to stories recorded by a woman is the only joy in their military life, which demands them to be constantly serious and never smile. Letters in the Wind is Alireza Amlni′s debut feature(his second feature Tiny Snow Flakes is screened in the New Currents Section this year) and Is about a young man from the countryside and his journey to the city, starting from his military life. The world, however, is not as romantic as they think and their love is one-sided. The sweet voice of the woman on the record player turns into screams full of contempt as soon as they start recording their own voices. The main character tells us that he felt a deep sadness climbing a mountain covered with snow on his way to Tehran. The energetic cinematography· and the witty direction make this character comic yet deeply moving. (Michelle Sohn)
