Murali Nair, a master of satire, has created a completely new type of psychological horror film. The life of a rich landowner turns into a nightmare as a wart below his lips grows bigger everyday. By showing how weak and pathetic people can become when they encounter an inexplicable situation, director Nair shows the fragility of human faith. He metaphorizes the insecurity and vulnerability of human beings into a mole that we cannot get rid of. It is this human insecurity and vulnerability that acts as a catalyst for the onset of inexplicable and uncontrollable situations. The brilliance of Arimpara lies in the way it portrays the metaphor of human insecurity as a wart′s unstoppable growth in a unique way, leading us to experience a totally new kind of fear. The director leaves the causes of human insecurity unexplained, prompting the audience to draw up an interpretation of their own.(Kim Ji-seok)
