Program Note
Co-directed by Trương Minh Quý (director of Viet and Nam (2024), Cannes Un Certain Regard) and Belgian filmmaker Nicolas Graux, this film captures the fading flows of language and memory through the daily life of Hậu, a Ruc woman born in a cave 60 years ago who now lives in a village caring for her grandchildren. The three titular motifs—hair, evoking life’s traces and passage of time; paper, representing the nonexistent Ruc script, once passed down orally and now longed for as a means of preservation; and water, symbolizing both time’s flow and the generational transmission of culture—serve as the film’s structural pillars. Through words and silences shared between Hậu, one of the last speakers of the Ruc language, and her grandchildren, the film quietly contemplates the vibrations of a disappearing language and people. The grain of 16 mm film and the 4:3 aspect ratio heighten the emotional density. It is a sensory ethnography and poetic documentary that conveys memory through the senses and inscribes language into silence. (JO Ji-hoon)
