Program Note
This is the second feature by Rita Hui, a female indie-film director of Hong Kong, who as a video artist, has been earnestly exploring the human mind. In this film, the mysterious communion between reality and spirit is explored, through a woman who communicates with the dead. Cotton (Michelle Wai) is a keening woman, who consoles the deceased with dance and wailing, at the funeral parlor where she works. The spirit, Ling (Mitsu Hana) always stays by her. Cotton’s wheelchair-bound
boyfriend, Hang (Ryan Lau), understands and loves Cotton as a soul mate. They have bizarre experiences, coming and going, to and from, between reality and fantasy, in the Luo Feng Mountain. Surrealistic seascapes, landscape paintings, and fantasy scenes are often shown in the film, harmonizing with the weird, high-pitch string instrument’s vibrations, leading us into the unknown world of spirits. The director’s sincere reflection on the underworld and the world of spirits imbued this ‘audience friendly experimental film’ with unique and peculiar atmosphere. (KANG Naeyoung)
