Program Note
Kamboziya Partovi and Jafar Panahi’s second project since Panahi’s governmental ban from all film related activities. The film begins in a villa by a quiet beach. A writer arrives with his dog and begins to write. Then one evening, a couple, being chased by someone, runs into the house looking for shelter, and strange things begin to happen. Since Panahi can’t officially make any films, he plays the entire story in a small space indoors, as he did with his previous film. This will remain his trademark for a while. The events that unfold inside the villa reflects the situation Panahi finds himself in, as well as the general Iranian state of affairs. Though the space inside the film and the storyline itself seem unrealistic, it actually is as realistic as it gets when considering the dark scenario both he and Iran find themselves in. The writer is played by Panahi’s friend and mentor, Partovi. His risky appearance in the film and co-directing is how Partovi shows his support and approval. (KIM Ji-Seok)
