Program Note
What was one to do after the war? In this film, post-war Vietnam is not revealed to us through any particular event. Instead, director Viet Linh captures the situation through the shared destiny of a
hotel-turned-flat and Tham, the servant who becomes manager of the flat. Victory Hotel is taken over by National Liberation Front troops as Saigon is liberated and turned into a flat for troops - the
Collective Flat. Tham becomes manager, but is still kind and loves the people living with him. Later, as the economy prospers, the Government decides to renovate the flat and turn it back into a hotel
′The family′ is offered money to move elsewhere, but Tham alone feels distressed by the fact that nobody really loved the flat. One day, Tham disappears, leaving a letter behind him.
The director doesn′t present her story in dramatic fashion; on the contrary, through her we become mere observers of the characters. As a result, she lets the changes that take place in the characters
and the flat become metaphors for the transformation of Vietnamese society which took place from the period following the war up to the eighties. We are given the opportunity to witness this change
which has come very slowly, but which has fundamentally changed everything in Vietnam. (Kim Sung-Tae)
