Program Note
After 20 years of discord with his son, Lao Ge moves into a home for the elderly. His friend Lao Chou, afflicted with bladder cancer, and others are preparing for a concert in Tienjin, preparations that have their ups and downs. After a successful show, the principal of the home, Lao Ge’s grandson and the band take a sunrise trip that brings closure to many. Lao Chou’s dying wish?to see the sun come up over the water?is fulfilled. Lao Ge’s grandson finally comes to understand the nature of the dispute between Lao Ge and his father. Lao Chou draws his last breath embraced by his friends. Lao Ge makes amends with his son thanks to his grandson’s mediation but returns to the home to prepare for another concert. Veteran Chinese cinema actors star in a film that captures the chasing of a dream against the beautiful landscapes of Inner Mongolia, and also illustrates the nature of aging with compassion, and the enduring value of family through the love of a father and son.
