Program Note
The title, meaning "In Praise of Love," is the latest film by the noted director, Jean-Luc Godard. We hear someone, who we do not see, describing a project about the four key moments of love: the initial meeting, physical passion, arguments and separations, and making up. The story is told through three couples, one young, one adult and one old. We are not informed the motives of the project: a play, a film, a novel or an opera, but it all becomes clear at the end. The film also deals with contemporary subjects like homelessness, globalization and the disappearing of the working classes. "They say my film is a documentary but I don′t even know the meaning of the word ′documentary′", Godard told French journal Les Cahiers du Cinema, adding, "This film is beyond me."
