Program Note
A 15-year-old girl, Elise, plays piano that her father left behind. Her mother, Betty, comes home drunk every night, and Elise cannot get to sleep until she comes home. Oftentimes, Boys or girls in dysfunctional families naturally outgrow their age. Elise wants to change such a situation. But her mother chooses to make a new boyfriend. There is a subtle change with the appearance of a man named Ludwig. Betty shows her interest in him in many ways. But one day, Betty was drunk as always and made a huge mistake to him. Their relationship cannot go back to what it was. Elise also has feelings for Ludwig, who has classical music records. One day when Betty hurts Elise’s feeling, Elise goes to Ludwig’s place. They caress each other and then Elise runs away. This happening can be interpreted in various ways: her loneliness and wounds, incurable longing for her father, and her awakening sexuality. <Fuer Elise> has a simple plot but the simplicity is filled with anxiety and the emotion of sympathy.
