Program Note
On the first day of work at a furniture store, Ning accompanies a driver on a sofa delivery. Little do they know it at the time, the delivery is the beginning of journey that deviates from their plan but takes them down a far more insightful path. In the film, the delivery and road trip become part of a strange vacation?as the title indicates?even though the two spend most of their vacation being idle. One sequence is composed as a short, and the camera often shoots images from behind its characters. When the day-to-day life of an unknown man randomly gets intercut with Ning’s inert road trip, an intangible sense of tension crops up. Who is this man? Why do we need to see him? Portraying the weariness of a young couple with their speechless desires, this film demands viewers tolerate periods of silence and stillness. Idleness itself becomes the theme of this film, inviting the viewer to experience the abstract concepts of alienation, solitude, and impossibility of communication in a corporal way. (KANG Sowon)
