It is believed there is a broad range of ghosts In Thailand, one of them being Pob, which lives on human organs. Near the Mekong River at the Thailand-Laos border, there is nothing legendary about Pob. It is a fact of life. director Apichatpong Weerasethakul is in the middle of rehearsals on his new project, <Ecstasy Garden>, which happens to be a thriller about Pob. (Ecstasy Garden is an actual project selected as a 2002 Busan International Film Festival APM project). Shifting between fact and fiction, the film begins with a classical guitar number and the plot develops through Phon and Tong’s conversations. However, Tong’s mother turns out to be a Pob. But is this scene part of <Ecstasy Garden> or part of <Mekong Hotel>? In Apichatpong’s world, the co-existence of humans and ghosts is not a shocking revelation. It is a cultural phenomenon common around the Mekong; the Pob’s existece is intimately connected to the Mekong River’s harsh history, ironically presented as a calm and silent presence flowing in the background.
