Program Note
Moju, a middle-aged man living in a Bangladeshi fishing village, trains rigorously for boli, a traditional form of wrestling in Bangladesh. He challenges Dofor, the village’s boli champion. The villagers mock him and call him crazy. Moju’s son Shafu even locks him up to stop his father from taking part in the match. But the showdown between Moju and Dofor is inevitable. Iqbal H. Chowdhury’s directorial debut The Wrestler is a film of images. When the camera captures the backside of the characters and the rolling waves they’re gazing upon in a single frame, when Moju moves through a small part of the vast, tranquil woods, or when Dofor hacks away at a fraction of the colossal dead whale that fills the screen, the film treats us to fantastical images by cleverly juxtaposing stillness and movement.
