Program Note
The sequel to Pang Ho-cheung’s commercial success <Love in a Puff> follows the first story of chain-smoking ad executive Jimmy and cosmetic specialist Cherie, who met in a smoking zone and proceeded to become lovers. While first film took place against the metropolitan backdrop of Hong Kong, the second is set against the grandeur of Beijing. The couple’s intimate relationship takes a downward turn when Jimmy, the younger of the two, takes off to Beijing forcing the two to part ways. Cherie reunites with him in Beijing but the immature Jimmy has already found another girlfriend and Cherie meets a more mature middle-aged man who promises a new kind of romance. But Jimmy and Cherie both realize that their bond is bigger and stronger than they’d imagined and it’s hard to just erase or ignore. Shawn Yue and Miriam Yeung reprise their roles and the film is again peppered with colorful dialogue in both Mandarin and Cantonese, lending a comic tone to the film that sets it apart from its counterparts.
