Program Note
Emerging Indonesian filmmaker Edwin’s version of the return of the prodigal son is centered Lana, abandoned in a zoo as a three-year-old. Oom, a giraffe keeper, raised her to live and work at the zoo and it is now all she knows of the world. One day, Lana falls in love with a handsome magician and runs away with him. However, the society she faces is ugly and corrupted. Her lover betrays her and people take advantage of her. In the end, Lana goes back to the zoo only to discover Oom is gone and only her beloved giraffe greets her. Edwin’s zoo leaves an impression; the contrast between night and day provides a dreamy landscape at times, a comforting blanket of nostalgia at others. Magic is an important concept, as Lana falls in love with a magician and the zoo’s tour bus appears out of nowhere when she needs it most. To Edwin, a zoo is a magical land filled with the same wonders as our childhood memories and most crucially, it is a place of innocence. (KIM Ji-Seok)
