Korean-Japanese director Yang Yonghi is a familiar name to us due to her previous films, <Dear Pyongyang> and <Sona, the Other Myself>, documentaries that told her father’s story after he moved her three brothers to North Korea, and the story of a niece/nephew whowas born and raised in North Korea. Now, she is back with a feature film detailing her brother Sungho’s departure from North Korea, return to Japan and is reunion with his family after 25 years. despite the underlying ideological elements, Yang concentrates on the story of a family. Yang’s family separation involved a long and perilous journey from South Korea to Japan and from Japan to North Korea. Her memory of her older brother is one of love, of someone who makes sacrifices for his family. Yang’s family may squabble and hurt one another based on ideology, nationality and ethnicity but within the boundaries of family, anything can be overcome. So in this film, we again clearly see her reasons for making dear <Pyongyang> and <Sona, the Other Myself>. (KIM Ji-Seok)
