Program Note
The Servant′s Shirt realistically captures the pre-open market ambience of the sixties in India. The film attempts to show the social conditions of the sixties by depicting details of the daily lives of the people, rather than to tell any particular story. Lower-class Santu and his wife Bahu struggle with a leaking roof in the monsoon. Santu tries everything to achieve a better life, however, the strict Indian class system and Santu′s stubborn pride in rejecting the servant′s shirt prevent Santu and Bahu from finding a better life. The weather might be an obstacle to economic change. People blame the weather for everything: sickness and even poverty. We can find the potential for a new beginning in Bahu rather than Santu. Bahu, who in the beginning appears as a conventional lower- class housewife, is able to gradually express her inner strength. However the last scene gives an unexpected twist to the hopes of the couple. The Servant′s Shirt is filled with the irony of language according to class differences, irrational results caused by incompetence, and dialogues which cross between tragedy and humor, which as a result, transmits 1960s India onto the screen in a realistic style.
