<10+10> is an omnibus feature where in 20 filmmakers were challenged to express the socalled authenticity of Taiwan as perceived by their own critical eyes. Commissioned by the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival in honor of the island’s 100th anniversary, the film comprises diverse cinematic forms to convey a sudden nostalgia seeping through one’s daily life, moments of fear, historical pieces still fresh and vital in our lives, the loneliness and segregation of the unloved and misunderstood and the effects of structural violence on those subjected to its abuse. If one thing binds all the films together it is the shared rendering of how common emotions are stimulated and experienced in modern Taiwan. The film makes us wonder and compare what each director thinks to be authentic and what we ourselves consider most genuine about the representations in the film. Taiwanese New Wave master Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Wang Toon are working filmmakers who ground the dynamic alliance of <10+10>. (KIM Jungsun)
