In the outskirts of Baghdad is a landfill covered with mounds of garbage and known by the locals, ironically, as the “hanging gardens.” The wasteland is filled with all sorts of discarded items, including even the corpses of babies who have been abandoned. Two brothers make a living by gathering and repurposing usable garbage for sale. One day, twelve-year-old As’ad finds a sex doll discarded by an American soldier. He takes the doll home, washes it, and rents the doll to men for sexual gratification. His business thrives until the doll is stolen. The director contrasts the images of Iraqi society that goes to the extremes to restrict the exposure of women’s bodies and paradoxically the people who are mad for the sex doll. In the place where a war has swept through, only the foul instinct and scarred hearts remain. (NAM Dong-chul)
