Program Note
Azerbaijani director Hilal Baydarov, whose film In Between Dying competed in the Venice Film Festival in 2020, studied film with Bela Tarr at Sarajevo Film Academy. Thus it is inevitable to feel Tarr’s influence from his films. Baydarov sometimes captures landscapes that that other filmmakers might completely ignore, viewing these panoramas as though they were something completely new. At one point, for example, the filmmaker focuses on a puddle of water with oil in as a way to convey the bleak sentiments of a cruel world. Sermon to the Fish begins with the story of a man returning from war. His hometown is devastated, and his sister lives alone in the abandoned place. Both he and his sister know that people cannot live there any longer. It is a unique film that shows the wounds of war only through the ruined landscapes of the world. (NAM Dong-chul)
