Forty-year-old Leila is busy taking care of her parents and four brothers. The men of her family work hard, but none can escape poverty. Despite their poor circumstances, their father still views himself as the patriarch of the clan. Since that requires money, he tries to sell the gold he had been secretly hiding from the family. Leila dreams of starting a family business that would save her family from poverty, but her brothers dream of making a huge fortune all at once. As a result, Leila’s and her father’s dreams are shattered. Leila’s Brothers illustrates the individual issues of each family member thoughtfully while also suggesting a blueprint for the Iranian society as a whole. It offers a calm and warm critique of individuals and society, from the useless patriarchal authority and honor, the futile consequences of human desires, the unyielding capitalist order, and economic sanctions against Iran.
