This third feature by Hong Sang-Soo is void of any colors. His reasoning behind this is that information contained within color may make characters′ emotions dull. This black-and-white film touches on the fine line between emotions of a man and woman, from the beginning to the end of their relationship. Soo-Jung is a staff writer for a production company who is involved with Young-Soo, her producer. Young-Soo, along with Soo-Jung, visits the gallery of rich schoolmate Jae-Hoon seeking his financial assistance for his film project. While having drinks together, Jae-Hoon feels attracted to Soo-Jung. Their love begins one day at the alley of Insa-dong (old-town in Seoul known for its traditional artifacts) as he kisses her for the first time. As the two are about to have intercourse, he discovers she′s still a virgin and backs down, impressed. The film is organized in five stages and each episode is repeated and varied depending on the recollections of two characters, Jae-Hoon and Soo-Jung. Their contradicting recollections result in different circumstances being presented, even how they engage in sex, showing that human beings and their lives can never be one-sided. Even the occasional staples of Seoul scenes, such as the cable car at Namsan and/or badminton games seem unfamiliar. This brings up a question: how much of our a recollections can we trust?
