Wadjda, a 10-year-old girl who wants a bicycle, decides to enter the Quran reciting competition with a prize of 1000 riyals. Through Wadjda′s struggle to own a bicycle, this film exposes the reality of Saudi Arabian women. Wadjda, who can′t ride a bike because she is a girl, has a mother who can′t drive because she is a woman, and a school principal who was just like Wadjda in the past. As Wadjda fights bias and grows, Wadjda′s mother also grows. As a result, Wadjda is full of touching moments and wit rather than sad scenes and anger. Wadjda was the first film made by the first female filmmaker in Saudi Arabia, where women were forbidden from working with men in public places, including theaters and film sets.
