Program Note
Taegu (Um Tae-goo) is a mid-level gangster boss. He tried to kill the boss of another gangster group in rivalry and flees to Jeju Island where he meets empty-eyed Jaeyeon (Jeon Yeo-been). She despises men like Taegu since she lost her family to gangsters who tried to remove her uncle, a former gang member. However, she and Taegu, both of whom have no one to depend on, are attracted to each other instinctively. Their happy moment in paradise ends in a flash as they are engulfed in an inescapable darkness that patiently awaits them. Night in Paradise skillfully adopts the conventions of film noir, but updates them to fit the present. It offers complete catharsis by being dreadful, showy, and obstinate. It is merciless in its depiction of the world a perfect fiction. (HONG Eunmi)
Director
Director
PARK Hoon-jung
Park Hoon-jung gained attention for his screenplay of I Saw the Devil (2010) and The Unjust (2010). These works signaled a new interest in the so-called "Korean Noir." Parks work culminated with The Showdown (2011), his directorial debut, and New World (2012). His later films include The Tiger (2015), V.I.P. (2017), and The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion (2018). His latest film, Night in Paradise, an unconventional love story, was highly praised in the non-competitive section of the Venice Film Festival 2020.
