This is a road movie that shouts out Kurdish pain to the world. The President of Iran receives a letter from 111 Kurdish girls. They demand that the government find them husbands, threatening mass suicide if it doesn’t. To solve this matter, Donyadide, a high-ranking government official, is dispatched to Kurdistan with an assistant, Sadegie, and a young guide, Ahoora. On the way Donyadide meets the families of the girls and the young Kurdish men leaving them to find jobs. Though Donyadide comes a slow realization, the flippant news media, officials who hold fake weddings to cover the problem and Turks who show up with 111 grooms-to-be don’t understand the real pain of the Kurds at all. The theme of the film is simple and clear. It is, as one of the Kurdish girls Donyadide meets says, “The Kurds are the mother of Iran, Turkey, and Iraq. Respect your mother.” Director Nahid Ghobadi portrays this odd story unrealistically, rendering it a paradoxical expression in order to emphasize that in reality nothing would likely change anyway.
