Program Note
This second film by director Wang Shaudi (Accidental Legend screened at last year′s PIFF) is a black comedy which satirizes the claustrophobic lives of city residents. The film′s four chapters - Car, House, Body and Love - present a tabloid of life in Taiwan with characters from all walks of life, from fashionable and prosperous plastic surgeons, restaurant owners, and pimps. Are all full of psychological complexes, and anxiety ridden about their territories being encroached upon. Dr. Cheng is obsessed with his house and car collection, and Ah Sing worry about their penises being too small, while Xiaohua wishes she wasn′t so tall, In fact, the episodes in this neighborhood represent a universal mass psychology of fear and anxiety. Wang Shaudi leaves room for hope, however, as in her prior film. The ′Love′ chapter suggests that complexes can be overcome through mutual understanding, and that Ah Sing can overcome the temptations of violence. Taipei is fearful but midnight promises to deliver hope.
