The news is busy reporting on hopes for economic development, but Yaoting’s family is in trouble. Her poor parents lose their jobs in Shenzhen and return to their hometown of Gansu. To support her family, Yaoting remains alone in Shenzhen, working at a factory and earning extra pay by participating in clinical trials for new drugs. The film faithfully depicts the dramatic contrast between the scenery and the working people of Shenzhen and Gansu. In the midst of rapidly changing Chinese society, Yaoting is unable to settle in either place. A manifestation of the crumbling young bodies and souls, this film ends with the younger generation, represented by Yaoting, on the road back to where they came from.
