Program Note
The Murmuring is the first film to raise the issue of the Japanese military "comfort women", which had not been officially discussed for nearly 50 years. Breaking the silence that had been forced on them at the intersection of imperialism and gender violence, the survivors finally voice their sufferings. Along with their testimonies, the camera importantly captures the lives that continue in the present. This present encompasses a historical time when the women broke their long silence and started the "comfort women" movement, a time of life as they lean on each other in pain, and an emotional time when they talk about death in one moment and dance in the next. Historical testimony is not limited to events that occurred in the past, as the survivors’ present lives also become cinematic testimonies—this is what makes this film shine. Capturing the struggles, daily life, and voices of the former "comfort women," The Murmuring now remains an invaluable historical memory. (HONG Soin)
Director
BYUN Youngjoo
Byun Youngjoo graduated from Ewha Womans University with a bachelor′s degree in law and earned her master′s degree in Film Studies at Chung-Ang University. The Murmuring documentary trilogy, which highlights the issue of the Japanese military sexual slavery, contributed to raising social interest in "comfort women," which had been forgotten in Korea. Since then, she has received attention for her first feature film Ardor (2002) and her second film Flying Boys (2004). Her most recent film Helpless (2011), based on Miyabe Miyuki′s novel, delicately depicted broken individuals during the global financial crisis and won Film Director Award at Baeksang Arts Award that year.
